What makes a Halloween movie a classic? A classic Halloween movie has many elements of horror such as suspense, a memorable villain like Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger, a spooky setting and an intense storyline. They often give the viewer a feeling of fear. When I think of classic Halloween movies, I think of the originals such as Halloween (1978), Hocus Pocus (1993), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Scream(1996) and A Nightmare on Elm Street(1984). Those movies are undeniable classic Halloween movies, and a mix of genres like true classic horror with fun and spooky family films.
Halloween (1978): 8.5/10
Starting with a character we all know is the iconic Michael Myers in the original Halloween film. I would rate this movie an 8.5/10 considering the longevity of the movie, feelings created by watching, enjoyment and the great impact on the slasher genre. It has lasted 46 years while still always being relevant whenever Oct. rolls around the corner. It has a suspenseful atmosphere and a simple story line, yet it’s effective in giving a somewhat fearful feeling. I believe this is one of the most classic Halloween movies ever because every year there’s tons of people dressing up as Michal Myers. This is an undeniable classic. The reason I took 2.5 points off is because of its pacing. The first half of the movie was slow building up to what was actually going to happen, and character development we see in the final girl Laurie. She is by far the most developed character in the movie, by her being smart, resourceful and a good girl. Michael Myers is more like a force than a character. He is presented as the force of evil, and his lack of development makes me think it was intentional.
Hocus Pocus (1993): 7/10
This movie has fun, exaggerated and amazing performances by the actresses, and it’s often considered a classic. The three witches are what make the movie so entertaining. The movie has a great mix of spooky humor. I don’t think it’s an Oscar winning film, but it’s a classic that a lot of people love. It’s not really a groundbreaking movie in terms of plot, and some parts can seem a little outdated, but I enjoyed watching it.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993): 9/10
The Nightmare Before Christmas is a very iconic movie that blends with the Halloween spirit. The stop motion animation is visually pleasing for the time it was made. The world of Halloween Town is filled with unique and memorable characters. The main character we follow is Jack Skellington and his journey of self discovery, and his curiosity for the holiday completely opposite is such a new story. The only reason it’s not a perfect 10 is because while it’s amazing the passing was a little slow at the start and flat sometimes, however I loved this film and it’s honestly one of my favorites.
Scream (1996): 8/10
It’s a great horror movie that is scary and clever. It stands out from other classic horror movies due to the mix of slasher elements with humor and self awareness from the characters. The characters even joke about horror movies which makes it even more different making fun of the classic showing how different it actually is. The reason it is an eight out of 10 is because some parts feel a bit too much, but I’m guessing that’s how the director wanted it because it was funny in some parts. Overall the movie Scream is a fun and scary movie that shows we can incorporate humor into the horror genre.
A Nightmare on Elms Street (1984):10/10
I love this movie. It’s a new storyline that I haven’t seen in other movies. I believe it’s one of the best horror movies ever and Freddy Krueger is such an iconic villain. The whole concept of a killer who can get you in your dreams is terrifying and super original. The way the movie blends reality and dreams keeps you hooked into the movie because you’re never sure if it was just a dream. The special effects were actually really impressive for a 40 year old movie. The movie doesn’t rely on jumpscares which I like, it’s just a really creepy and tension building movie.
Overall all of these movies are great in their own way. They all give Halloween its special touch and feeling to it. I believe that any of these movies will be a fun time binging on the couch.
