Many people have different ideas of their “perfect summer.” Some people enjoy going on vacation, going to summer camp, staying at home and many other ways of spending their break away from school. However, most people can agree that the best part of summer is the freedom away from the homework and classes. Instead of spending the summer the same way you spend your school year, here are some ideas to add to your summer bucket list.

1. A day trip on the train: There are many places to go on a quick trip on the Amtrak train from the VEC station, such as San Diego, San Luis Obisbo, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Taking the train from Ventura to Santa Barbara is about a 45 minute trip, and once you arrive, there are many options of where to go and what to do. You can go to the beach and spend time eating and shopping on State St.

2. Going camping with friends: There are limitless options of places to go camping in Southern California. Some close options are Emma Wood, Leo Carrillo, Refugio State Beach, Malibu Creek State Park and Point Mugu State Park. Other places to camp are Big Sur, Morro Bay, San Onofre and Moro Campground in Laguna Beach, but these locations require a further drive.

3. Going on a day trip to one of the Channel Islands: There are eight Channel Islands and public visitation is allowed on six of them. Traveling to Avalon on Catalina Island can be a very fun trip. Taking the ferry from Long Beach to Avalon can cost as low as $20 and there are endless options of what to do while there, such as ziplining or go parasailing. On any of the Channel Islands there are several beautiful hikes, picturesque beaches and unique wildlife.

4. Make a time capsule: Making a time capsule is a fun way to capture your memories and save them to remember in the future. Some things to add to a time capsule are pictures from your current life, crafts and a letter to your future self. You can bury or hide your time capsule to discover years later!
5. Have a picnic: A picnic is a fun and easy way to get out of the house and spend time with family or friends. You can enjoy a picnic in any location, but two classic spots are the beach or the park. Some typical foods for a picnic include sandwiches, crackers, salami, cheese, muffins, fruits and baked goods. Having a picnic during sunset at the beach is a perfect activity to enjoy throughout summer.
