VHS boys varsity water polo’s first home game of the season
On Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, the varsity boy’s water polo team played against Dos Pueblos at 3:15 p.m. in the VHS pool, winning their first home game of the season, and debuting their season opener.
The VHS waterpolo team has up to 15 players, including six substitutes and one goalie. They work as a team to drive the ball to the end of the pool and score in the goal.
Since the scores were constantly alternating, it was a closely matched competition and both teams were constantly trying to ensure the win. Each team was working hard to quickly adjust their strategy as the game progressed, trying to secure a lasting advantage.
Athletes have noticed a difference when performing at home vs away, ultimately making playing at home an impressionable experience. With the crowd and familiar setting at VHS, there is a noticeable effect on the players. Captain of the boys waterpolo team Cole Loomis ‘25 said, “The first home game felt good. There was a lot of hype around the area, overall a good vibe.”
Ezra Davis ‘26 said, “I mean, that is the pool we practice in every single day, and I mean all pools and the goals are all a little bit different, so it definitely helps to play where you are used to playing.”
Led by coach Matt Charrie the boys were able to secure an advantage in the fourth quarter. Ian Moore ‘25 was a key player in VHS’ victory, scoring two goals in the fourth quarter, to bring VHS, and his team the win.
Even though the game ended in a close score of 11-10, VHS managed to pull through and win, making a winning home record for the boys and bringing them one step closer to making it to CIF (California Interscholastic Federation). With upcoming games throughout Oct., at San Marcos on Oct. 3, Buena on Oct. 15 at home, and the season ahead of them winning league matches will contribute to their chance of going to CIF. Make sure to come out and support the VHS boys water polo team.
