Flag football goes three years undefeated by Buena
On Sept. 4, Ventura High School flag football played their third league game of the season against Buena High School. This would be their third league win of the season after their two preseason losses.

This year flag football is playing with new CIF regulations including a one yard rush where the rusher can start from one yard away from the center. Due to this rule they have also added a new position, the blocker, who can interfere with rushers routes to the quarterback, but without contact. They have also allowed punts for the first time and have limited timeouts to two per half. This is just an introduction to the new rules for this year.
The first quarter started with a Cougar touchdown with six minutes left with no additional points, leaving the score at 6-0. Then with 43 seconds left in the quarter the Cougars scored another touchdown and chose to go for ten years gaining them two points, ending the quarter with 14-0.
Into the second quarter Zen Guelcher ‘29 almost got an interception but wasn’t able to complete the catch. With five minutes left VHS scored a touchdown and followed it going for one point at the five yard, making the total 21-0. With a minute left Desiree Nelms ‘26 catches Buena’s put, switching them to offense 20 yards from their end zone. One final timeout is called with 46 seconds left, leaving the score at 21-0 at half time.
Kailey Champion ‘28 said, “I think we were better on both sides of the ball. We talked and weren’t getting mad at each other on the field. While Buena was kinda getting angry at each other, we kept composure.”
After the five minute break the third quarter ended with two touchdowns. The first touch down of this quarter was at 2:34 which would be the fourth for the game putting the score at 28-0. VHS was then able to put down another touchdown with 2:43 left. They went for 1 point but was not successful. The third quarter ended with a score of 34-0.

A touchdown plus the additional point late into the fourth quarter with three minutes left. Later Naima Tover ‘26 gets the only interception of the game which was also her first of the season. The game resulted in a 41-0 win for VHS.
Ava Ortman ‘26 said, “the highlight of my game I’d say was when I ran in a touchdown and the lights went crazy and I celebrated with my team.”
The six touchdowns of this game were made by Ortman, two by Riley Hotzler ‘27 and three by Kaiya Cooke ‘26 awarding her the player of the game on MaxPreps.
