Ventura High School celebrates Dia De Los Muertos

The senior lawn and front office are brought to life with ofrendas and alebrijes.
Art teacher Hilary Morefeild said, “[Pedro] Linares is the creator of alebrijes, he used to make piñatasout of cardboard. When he was 20, he had an accident and went into a coma state. During that state he had a vision, he was about to die. [In] his [vision] he kept hearing the word ‘alebrijes,’ ‘alebrijes.’ Then he started to see colorful animals, blends of two animals together. One of the elements of alebrijes is that it has to have at least two animal parts of it. So, when he was able to recover from that accident, he tried to construct his dream into real life using his [skills with] cardboard.” Photo by: Journey Quan.
