Sizzling heat waves hit VHS
Ventura High School has recently been hit with a heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 80 to 95 degrees fahrenheit. These unusual temperatures make it challenging for staff and students to focus on their studies. I’m sure you’ve heard complaints around campus about the high temperatures, and honestly, I can’t help but agree with them. Students with PE or who participate in a sport likely feel the same way since physical activity and high temperatures don’t go well together. Although fall is right around the corner, it feels like summer just started.
Girls golf coach and physical education teacher, Sierra Meyers said, “There’s been more complaining for sure and I also feel like they’re causing a bunch of natural disasters especially in Ventura County.” The high temperatures have made it difficult for a lot of students to comfortably participate in physical education activities, which can lead to an excessive amount of complaining throughout the day. Although students and staff do find it challenging to stay cool in the heat, there are ways to prevent overheating. Meyers said, “Stay inside or go in the shade or [wear] hats, drink a lot of water make sure you’re hydrating, pay attention to headaches and any sign of dehydration.”
As for students involved in sports, it can be very difficult with the heat waves. Cross country runner Sebastian Ambriz ‘28 said, “We had a race last friday and it was up to 90 degrees and everybody suffered.” As Sebastian claimed, lots of students participating in cross country experience overheating due to the high temperatures. Even basic training can be very challenging for cross-country runners due to the recent heat waves, which can lead to dizziness and dehydration. Ambriz said, “Sometimes an easy workout can feel ten times harder because of the heat.”
Bringing a bottle of cold water to school will be a big help for those who suffer from the heat. Even a mini fan can help to prevent overheating. I have noticed not a lot of students bring a bottle of water to school every day. Staying hydrated is very important, especially during the hot weather. Check the weather every morning to know what to expect, it’s always better to come to school prepared.
