Recently, a trailer by Warner Bros was released introducing the new upcoming Minecraft movie. Many have already reviewed it, especially online. Most of the time, reviews would say they didn’t like how Jack Black is playing the role of Minecraft Steve. Another popular complaint would be the creepy visuals not matching the actual game style at all. I watched the trailer, and I can see where people are coming from. The movie being live-action isn’t that much of a problem for me, but it’s the CGI that throws me off.
The movie is said to be PG-13, which is a bummer for some. In the games, you’re supposed to hunt animals to eat and keep yourself alive. I do agree that it would’ve been cool if they made the movie more of a survival film. It’d be more realistic to the games if it were a rated R movie, but at the same time, the movie is targeted to families and children who enjoy animated films.
Dayana Ramirez ‘28 said, “I think the movie will be bad because the characters, the production, and the stage set don’t look accurate.” The CGI mixed with real actors looks silly to many, and it looks nothing like the actual game. Although the trailer disappointed a lot of people, we don’t know for sure how it will go. Ramirez said, “Based on the trailer it doesn’t look like it’ll be game-accurate, but once again, I hope it is.”
A better choice of actors would’ve made this movie feel more game-accurate. Jack Black being the actor for Steve looks nothing close to game accurate — it’s quite literally just Jack Black wearing a blue shirt. The random characters in this movie throw many people off. If they were to add in Minecraft Alex and of course replace the actor for Steve, it would be better.
Sophia Tadeo ‘28 said, “I personally do not think the movie will be worth the wait only because when studios make a movie on a popular trend it usually doesn’t do too good.” This brings another good point on why the Minecraft movie might be a major flop. This is kind of similar to what happened to the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, where the movie doesn’t connect with the game at certain points. Tadeo said, “I think the Minecraft movie will try to replicate the likes of Minecraft story mode but not much of the original game. And even then I think it will also stray away from being too similar to story mode.”
Overall, the upcoming Minecraft movie looks like it will be a big miss. The CGI is very bad and almost terrifying, the actors look nothing like the game characters, and it has brought disappointment to a lot of fans. The Minecraft movie hasn’t been released yet so we don’t know for sure how it will go, but for right now, we can only hope it won’t be as bad as it looks.
