2015 Broadway play makes its theater debut

Lin Manuel Miranda, composer, director and actor in the 11 Tony award-winning play Hamilton, has announced the play’s debut into the theater. The play has been nominated for the Tony Awards 16 times, has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize for drama, a grammy for best musical theater album and seven Olivier Awards.
The Hamilton soundtrack also broke a record as the highest charting cast album in the Billboard 200 in 2020. The Broadway original soundtrack includes 23 songs. The most listened to song is the opening track “Alexander Hamilton.”
Hamilton has broken records in the play and music industry, but has also broken the billion dollar revenue mark, making it the highest grossing broadway musical as of 2025. After this revenue was reached, on Aug. 5 Miranda went on The Tonight show and announced the film recording of the original cast would soon be coming to theaters. The play’s theater debut was Sept. 5.
Kristin Fosse ‘26 said, “[Hamilton] was really entertaining and it was complex and seeing it in theaters was inspiring and it enlightened me.”
The theater debut on Sept. 5 was estimated to earn above nine million on the first weekend Hamilton was in the theater, making an estimated 3.9 million on the first day.

In a video posted by Disney Studios, Miranda said, “By popular demand we’re extending your chance to see Hamilton on the big screen.”
Originally, Hamilton showings were supposed to end the week of Sept. 7-12, however now the film will be extending into Sept. 17.
Leone DePalma ‘26 said, “I liked seeing it in theaters because it felt a lot different.”
Since the play debuted in 2015, the Broadway version has had celebrity guests come and view the play. Some celebrities include Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Barack Obama and Jimmy Fallon. Facebook groups were made, fan clubs were started and ticket sales peaked in 2016.
Miranda’s interpretation of American history has become high demand amongst some fans and celebrities who participated in buying Hamilton’s $1000+ tickets and since became the best Broadway show right now according to SeatPlan.
