New insights and details to know before watching Marvels new movie

Marvel Studios has released a couple of Avengers movies in the past couple of years with movies like, “Avengers: Endgame” reaching 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ reaching 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Both movies had the same rating of 8.4/10 on IMDb and both made over two billion dollars at the box office worldwide. Now, Marvel is in the process of trying to make its next movie: ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which will be coming out in theaters Dec. 18. Some fans were excited about the new movie and how superstar actor Robert Downey Jr. will be the movie’s antagonist instead of playing Iron Man, the protagonist of past movies.
The movie will primarily follow the ‘Kang Dynasty’ and feature Doctor Doom causing widespread chaos across the multiverse. Now, newer and older superheroes, including Captain America played by Anthony Mackie, Winter Soldier played by Sebastian Stan, Thor played by Chris Hemsworth and Shang-Chi played by Simu Liu will come together to try to defeat Doctor Doom. Filming began April of 2025 and the teasers that followed got some Marvel fans excited for the MCU, Marvel Cinematic Universe, movie. However, there are some recent MCU TV shows and movies that have key moments and scenes that incorporate elements that will also be in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

In past MCU movies, Downey Jr. played the character of Iron Man and starred in all three ‘Iron Man’ movies and in all past ‘Avengers’ movies. In those movies, he was one of the main protagonists and now in this Avenger movie, he is playing the character of Doctor Doom, which is a big change from being the hero to being the evil supervillain. So now some, but not all fans, are curious if Downey Jr. will change his acting style or personality playing this role of Doctor Doom.
Mateo Bueno ‘28 said, “[‘Avengers: Doomsday’] will be worth the wait and I can’t wait to see the Marvel characters fight Doctor Doom…I would like to see a clone of Iron Man maybe but Robert Downey Jr. fits the vibe of playing Doctor Doom and if he could play the character of Iron Man, he can play any character.”
There are Marvel fans who find Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom confusing and not fitting the storyline of most comics and movies but others find it perfectly fitting for him to receive a lead character change for this movie. MCU fans liked Downey Jr. as Iron Man but after the character of Iron Man passed away in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ some fans were wondering whether or not Downey Jr. will stay in the MCU.
Through an interview with Downey Jr. and journalist Aaron Couch from The Hollywood Reporter, Downey said, “New mask. Same task. Boy, I tell you, I like playing complicated characters.”
Having played Iron Man since the first “Iron Man” movie was released in 2008, Downey Jr. will now adapt a role that will bring an antagonist to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ instead of taking the role of being the leading protagonist.
Mason Mattavich ‘28 said, “People have waited awhile for a proper Avengers movie so I am excited for this one…I think that Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom is a little bit of a cash grab but I still love him anyways.”
