The Rams obtain a major piece to help their struggling secondary

The Los Angeles Rams and Kansas Chiefs have agreed to a trade sending All-Pro cornerback and two-time Superbowl winner Trent McDuffie to Los Angeles for a package of draft picks that includes the number 29 pick in the 2026 draft, 2026 fifth and sixth-round picks and a 2027 third-round pick. This move had been anticipated, as the Los Angeles Rams secondary was struggling during the last couple weeks of the regular season, and especially in the playoffs.
The Rams have struggled in finding good corners ever since Jalen Ramsey got traded to the Miami Dolphins. McDuffie is the perfect player with a skill set that fits exactly what the Rams need. McDuffie is an elite and versatile cornerback known for a very high football IQ, anticipation and physical coverage skills. He excels at playing both in the slot and outside, quick footwork to lockdown receivers. Gavin Smith ‘27 said, “Yeah, I think it was a great move because they got a really good cornerback and they only gave up a couple of picks and it made their defense better.”
McDuffie showcases top-tier tackling, aggressive run support and effective blitzing. McDuffie also performs at a high level versus some of the league’s top offensive players such as Deebo Samuel in Super Bowl 58. This is a very important attribute as the Rams can simply isolate McDuffie against the opposing team’s best wide receiver such as Seahawks receiver JaxonSmith-Njigba, which helps the defense to shut down offenses. The Rams also have a history of trading away.
Another important aspect of the trade is the experience that McDuffie brings to the locker room. Having already played on championship winning teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, with intense situations in playoff games, he understands what it takes to compete at the highest level even during important games. Stephan Escamilla ‘27 said, “I think he’ll improve a lot because I feel like last year they were lacking on defense and his experience will be very important.”
This kind of experience is very valuable for a Rams defense that has been desperately searching for consistency. McDuffies leadership can help younger defensive backs develop faster while also setting a higher standard for the Rams secondary to look up to. With a player who has already proven himself in the NFL in very important games, McDuffie can bring experience worthwhile to the Rams and excitement to the fans.
