Sabrina Carpenter starts the holidays in November with Christmas EP, “fruitcake”

Sabrina Carpenter rose to fame in 2017 when she starred in the Disney Channel show “Girl Meets World” alongside Rowan Blanchard. Since then, she has acted in over 10 movies and shows, released 5 albums and released her debut EP, “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying.” Though she has been releasing music since 2014, her music became popular on TikTok for her album, “emails i can’t send.” Afterwards, fans anticipated her next musical release, which happened to be the christmas EP, “fruitcake.”

“A Nonsense Christmas”

“A Nonsense Christmas” was originally released as a single on Dec. 7,  2022, but was added as a track on “fruitcake.” It’s the only song on this album not stylized in lowercase. “A Nonsense Christmas” is a rewrite of Carpenter’s song “nonsense.” It features perfect holiday lyrics such as “Woke up this morning, thought I’d write a ‘Christmash’. How quickly can you build a snowman? Think fast.” The song will give you an upbeat feeling, putting you in a holiday mood.

 “buy me presents”

The song “buy me presents” follows a girl who wants her “special someone” to buy her presents. It’s as if she’s sending him a text message. She also tells him she can find someone else, showing her pure confidence. This song is similar to “A Nonsense Christmas,” without being such a sweet, obvious love song.

“santa doesn’t know you like i do”

Again, “santa doesn’t know you like i do” is similar to “A Nonsense Christmas” as it’s also a love song. In this song, Carpenter gives examples as to why she knows the said person better than Santa, “Santa doesn’t know you like I do. I know all of your favorite songs, Pick up each time you call.” It’s very sweet, heartfelt, and a little bit more normal than other songs on this album.

“cindy lou who”

“cindy lou who” is a holiday heartbreak made into music. It tells the story of a girl ,possibly Carpenter, and a boy who finds another partner  while he is in the process of finding himself. It makes you think of the separate conflicts each character is facing. The girl is facing heartbreak while the boy faces  guilt. The girl is heartbroken, but she knows he’s happier, and for that, she feels guilty as well. This song is 100/10, I definitely recommend it.

“Maybe he met you somewhere in the desert, while he was soul searching, he found someone better” is a lyric from track four, “cindy lou who.” Graphic by: Journey Quan.

 “is it new years yet?”

“is it new years yet?” is all about juxtaposing Christmas and New Years. In this song, Carpenter sings about how much she wants it to be New Years using witty phrases, that I love, like “Santa, Santa. Boy, you’re the worst. It’s the 25th, I wish it was the 1st.” Each line front he bridge, including this one, makes me excited for New Years.

 “white xmas”

“white xmas” is a cover of the one of the best Christmas classics of all time, “White Christmas,” originally written by Irving Berlin and sung by Bing Crosby. It was written for Crosby in 1942, for the movie “Holiday Inn.” But, since then, more than 500 people have covered it in many different languages and styles, one of the most popular cover artists being Bing Crosby. The ending of “white xmas” also features a snippet of “Jingle Bells” in the last couple seconds of the song.
