This year’s Grammys were an exciting moment for many popular artists and bands

This year’s Grammys took place on Feb. 4. The Grammys are awards presented by the Recording Academy to recognize achievements in the music industry. They are regarded by many as the most prestigious awards in the music industry worldwide.

This year’s host was Trevor Noah, a South African comedian and writer. This was Noah’s third time hosting the Grammys awards.

As always, there were many controversial nominees and winners of the awards. Album of the Year had eight nominees: “Midnights” by Taylor Swift, “Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd” by Lana Del Rey, “GUTS” by Olivia Rodrigo, “SOS” by SZA, “The Record” by boygenius, “World Music Radio” by Jon Batiste, “The Age of Pleasure” by Janelle Monáe and “Endless Summer Vacation” by Miley Cyrus. The winner was unsurprisingly Taylor Swift’s album, “Midnights.”

“Taylor Swift kinda gets annoying when she wins everything, like give somebody else a chance,” said River Grinsel ‘27. This was Swift’s fourth Album of the Year award, making her the only person ever to win Album of the Year four times.

One artist, Phoebe Bridgers, won four awards at the 2024 Grammys. Bridgers won the most Grammys of the night with her band, Boygenius. They won under the categories of Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Rock Song, Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Performance. Her song, “Not Strong Enough,” won two of her four awards. Billie Eilish won Song of the Year for her song, “What Was I Made For,” which appeared in the 2023 summer’s biggest movie, “Barbie.”

Amanda Tepaske ‘27 said, “The most controversial moment in the Grammys was when Miley Cyrus won a bunch of awards.”

Many viewers thought Cyrus did not deserve her humorous nominations and her two wins. Miley Cyrus made headlines by winning two Grammys, for her popular song, “Flowers,” which was ranked fourth on Apple Music. This song won Best Pop Solo Performance and the highly coveted Record of the Year.

“The most deserving win was Laufey’s win,” said Marlie West ‘27.

Laufey performed her hit song “From the Start,” live at the 66th Grammys Awards Premiere Ceremony. She later won Traditional Pop Vocal Album for “Bewitched.”

In a shocking performance, “The Piano Man,” Billy Joel, appeared on the Grammys stage.   of his new single “Turn the Lights Back On.” After 17 years of not releasing any new music or appearing at the Grammys “The Piano Man” came back strong.

Another controversial win was Best Rap Album. Popular albums including “Her Loss” by Drake, “UTOPIA” by Travis Scott, “HEROES & VILLAINS” by Metro Boomin and “King’s Disease III” by Nas were nominated, although “Micheal” by Killer Mike won. This wasn’t Killer Mike’s only win either. He won every category he was nominated for, including Rap Album, Rap Song and Rap Performance.

The 2024 Grammys was full of wins, losses and performances and will be one to remember.
