VHS Swim and Dive begins their season with a victory against Saugus High School
On Feb. 25, 2025, Swim and Dive kicked off their season with a victory against Saugus High School at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center. With a team of 70 swimmers and five divers, VHS went 128-128 for JV boys, 166-115 for Varsity boys, 151-106 for JV girls and 150-132 for Varsity girls.
Coach Matt Cherrie said, “It was our first meet, expectations were not high. Many of our athletes came off a difficult weekend of competition with their club teams. I would say, our team surpassed my expectations. They swam really well, with minimal technical issues. I think the Varsity Boys team is much stronger in some spots where we were lacking last year. 200 Free, 100 Back and 100 Breast most notably. The Varsity Girls team is very strong with 11 seniors, returning CIF Div 2 Champions in the 4×50 Free Relay and Individual CIF Champion in the 200 Free and 100 Fly, Sarah Beckman.”
Bobby Comstock ‘25, a Varsity boys swimmer who has been on the team all four years, said, “I did pretty good. I did the 200 freestyle which I got a PR in, and the 100 fly which I did alright. I didn’t PR but I did get second. Both of our relays did very well, we got three seconds within auto CIF time on our medley, and four [seconds] on our 400 relay.”
“Our divers got second, third, fourth and fifth to help us win the meet,” said Cherrie.

Neil Schafer Mitchell ‘27, a first time diver, said, “[I got into diving] because all my friends do it, my favorite memory was this last meet, because it was really fun. Personally, I did not do very well at this meet, but I did learn a lot and have fun.”
Comstock said, “My favorite memory from this swim meet was getting absolutely fried by Logan Divine, getting beat by eight seconds in the fly. I would say that was cool.”
VHS Swim and Dive has their next meet Mar. 3, against Pacifica, they are expected to win, cementing a winning streak to kick off their season.
