Was 2025 a golden or garbage year for movie releases?

2025 had many massive movie releases, such as “A Minecraft Movie” and “Superman 2025”. Some of these were successes, but some films such as “Snow White (2025)” had underperformed, as it had not broken even. Sometimes, the box office numbers are inaccurate to the actual opinions of the people who watched them.

Benjamin Nichols ‘29 said, “[My favorite movie of 2025 was] probably ‘Thunderbolts, and [The last movie I saw in theaters was] Thunderbolts. [The only movie I disliked was] Captain America: Brave New World”.

Carter Koontz ‘29 said, “I last saw Caught Stealing. [My favorite movie of 2025 was] Weapons. [My top three movies of 2025 are] Weapons, Caught Stealing and 28 Years Later.”

Sebastian Deseto ‘29 said, “[My favorite movie of 2025 was] probably Superman, or Thunderbolts [My top ten movies of 2025 are] Thunderbolts, Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth and then Fantastic Four at the very bottom. [The last movie that I saw in theaters was] Fantastic Four.”

Liam Stuart ‘29 said, “[My favorite movie of 2025 was] Wicked For Good. [The last movie I saw in theaters was] the Minecraft Movie. [I think that instead of remaking classics, they should] make new ones.”

Although there were some major movie fails this year, movies such as “A Minecraft Movie” were successes. One way to see the success or praise that movies get is the website “Rotten Tomatoes”, as it shows the rating from zero to 100%, and a higher score is better. Some movies like “Elio” however may have misleading rotten tomato scores, as it has an 83% but it failed in terms of money, which made $154 million worldwide but did not have any cultural impact, nor praise from critics. Some movies like “Superman 2025” had made $600 million worldwide, and the Rotten Tomatoes score matches that success with a score of 90%. Although box office numbers usually show the quality of movies, they can be wrong, so it’s better to watch the movies yourself instead of just going off of the success. Movies like “A Minecraft Movie” were huge successes but the quality did not match the movie’s budget. 2025 definitely had some new classics that will be remembered, unfortunately some were not as lucky and will be forgotten.
