A look into the budgeting and planning actions for dances and other activities

VHS hosts annual dances such as prom and homecoming. These school events raise the spirit on campus and create memories throughout the school year for students. VHS ASB organizes these events on campus for the student population.
ASB advisor Salvador Villalobos said, “In my opinion, based on the two years that I’ve overseen ASB, I would say homecoming [is the most popular campus event] because we’ve always had over a hundred attendees.”
School dances hosted annually by ASB require extensive planning, months to a year in advance. Ticketed school events such as dances generate revenue from sales and create lines of peers at the student store to purchase admission. Determining ticket price is one part of planning these events and factors such as venue and entertainment aid in setting a ticket price.
Villalobos said, “Pricing goes based on what we call our potential revenue. So the potential revenue will go based on what facilities we are using, what venue we are using, what entertainment company we are using, what type of services [and] decorations we are going to have. So, prices can range, depending on the cost of all those services.”

Nickolas S’gro ‘29 said, “I always thought [profits] went to [like] the school for funds or for the dance to pay.” Ticket profit from events generates money that is used for paying for services at the dance as well as upcoming events. Senior Ball is hosted in the winter and prom is hosted in the spring. Profits from ticket sales go to next year’s events. Villalobos said, “So for example, prom profit goes to the junior class which is then used to plan their Senior ball and any senior activities they might have planned.”
Besides dances, ASB hosts events like club week, the cardboard boat race, food faire and rallies. Villalobos said, “The ones that are not ticketed or don’t have a cost, I guess you can say [these] would be our smaller events that we typically do for the most part during school hours.” This year, ASB planned and hosted the first Cougar Parade on Poli Street for rivalry week.
