Students can use new AI Chat on ClassLink for academic purposes

As the 2025-26 school year begins, there are various tools that students can use that can help them with their academics. A new tool that students can use is an AI Chat on ClassLink called Securly. Securly was founded in 2013 and was just added this year on ClassLink for students to use. It can be used for anything related to academics and emotional wellbeing. It can provide homework help and explain questions in greater detail. For example, if a student is struggling with a physics problem, Securly could break it down step-by-step to help them understand better. Students can also be given support though Securly. The district can see every conversation students have with the AI.

For people who are concerned with Securly accessing students’ personal information, Securly does comply with the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. These acts protect students’ personally identifiable information. If a student is concerned about privacy issues or other concerns regarding this AI, Securly can be disabled temporarily by a teacher for as long as the student wishes.

Amara Field ‘27 said, “In my opinion, Securly chat is beneficial to prevent cheating in class. I think that students could possibly benefit from the use of this AI chat. As long as it doesn’t share direct answers and the student engages in actually learning the steps, it could be a very useful tool for school.”

Because Securly conversations can be seen by the district, this means students who try to cheat will be caught. Morgan Gambill ‘26 said, “I don’t think students should use it, I think they should get help from their teacher instead.”

This is another perspective regarding the impact that this app could have in students’ academic experiences.

There are mixed opinions on whether Securly is more beneficial, or unnecessary. Some students will utilize this app to help with their learning while others will rely on more traditional methods of assistance with academics. As AI is further developing in our society, this app gives students an opportunity to learn more about it and how to best utilize it.
