Was the Conformity Gate theory complete hysteria or genius storytelling?
“Stranger Things” is one of the biggest shows on the planet. To better put it into perspective, within the first few days of the final season airing it had a total of 8.46 billion watch minutes. The first four episodes, referred to as “Volume 1,” were released on Nov. 27, 2025, episodes five to seven aired on Dec. 25, 2025 and the finale of the fifth season aired on Dec. 31, 2025. The season had moderate praise, scoring a 7.6/10 on IMDB and an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. There were a few important details that supported Conformity Gate, with the finale specifically, mainly the fact that people thought that it was a complete publicity stunt. There were various pieces of evidence that included many inconsistencies with the previous episodes. The name of the theory, Conformity Gate, originates from the epilogue found in episode eight. Within this episode we encounter a peculiar scene where the characters are shown living happy lives without any troubles unlike any other time in the show. The theory originated from and the Twitter user “67gate” with their main points being the D&D binders that were shown in one of the final shots of the finale spelling “X-A-LIE”, with “X” referring to Dimension X or the abyss which was where the Mind Flayer was fought and defeated. After the original tweet was made and spread to other platforms.

The theory called Conformity Gate starts with the idea that Mike Wheeler, one of the main characters portrayed by Finn Wolfhard, is in fact being controlled by the overarching villain of the series, Vecna, portrayed by Jamie Campbell Bower. For some background, Vecna’s powers work by invading a person’s mind to show them their fears, secrets and things they are ashamed of to take control of you, and then kill you by brutally snapping your bones. People believed that Mike Wheeler was already attacked by Vecna and sent to a dream world which Vecna does to take control of their mind because of many props in the background being miscolored, which is a way to find out the way to escape the dream world.

Another piece of evidence is in the epilogue of episode eight during the graduation scene all of the kids with glasses have the same glasses as Henry Creel, who is the human form of Vecna which is consistent in the other fake worlds that Vecna has put other characters in. Also in the epilogue, the character Vickie Dunne, portrayed by Amybeth McNulty, does not appear once. Vecna would not know who that is even though she is an important character, being the love interest of Robin Buckley, portrayed by Maya Hawke. All of this evidence led fans to believe that there would be a new episode on Jan. 7 as the number seven has appeared many times in the show, such as in episode one of season one. The character Will Byers, portrayed by Noah Schnapp, rolls a seven while playing the game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), being caught by a Demogorgon, a fictional villain in D&D and the namesake behind the monster of the same name in “Stranger Things,” and in the same episode Will Byers gets caught by a Demogorgon and taken to the Upside Down, a fake version of earth full of monsters and evil spores. Jan. 7 is also an important day as it is Orthodox Christmas and the rest of the season seven batches released on holidays with the first four episodes, Volume 1, released on Thanksgiving, the next three episodes, Volume 2, released on Christmas and the finale episode released on New Years’ Day.
Idriss Snoussi ‘27 said, “It is a conspiracy theory created by fans who didn’t like the ending and wanted there to be more so bad that they gaslit themselves into thinking there were clues to a whole new episode. If it were true then it would have cost Netflix so much money because they showed it in a lot of theaters.”
Oliver Quintaro ‘29 said, “Maybe, but it wouldn’t have made much sense.”
This all hinted towards a new episode releasing on Jan. 7 but the day came and went and there was nothing related to a new episode released even though Netflix added a new thumbnail photo for the series. On Jan. 12, Netflix released a documentary called “One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things” which made fans believe that there was going to be another episode.
