Kailee Staniland breaks the Ventura scoring record for most career points

On Jan. 6, VHS took on San Marcos High School in a game that ended with a new record for the Cougars. Ventura guard Kailee Staniland ‘26, a four-year varsity girls basketball player, broke the career record for points scored with a 32-point effort in a 56 to 40 win against the Royals. The new record stands at a career total of 1,862 points breaking the previous record of 1,820 points held by Kali Bennett ‘07. She also broke the boys all-time point total that was previously held by her dad, Jeff Staniland ‘99. Kailee Staniland said, “It feels unreal, honestly. I’ve put in so much work over the years, and to see it pay off like this means everything.”
Kailee Staniland is a team captain. Kirra Anderson-Turner ‘28 said, “Kailee brings a really great sense of leadership to the team. She always helps me on things when she can tell I’m struggling or will give me pointers that always end up helping me improve my game. On and off the court, Kailee’s an amazing leader for our team and always takes initiative.”
Kailee Staniland is,as of 1/21/26, leading the team in points per game with 23.4. All of the scoring does not come without assists as she is leading the team with five point seven per game. Staniland has also had a consistent increase in points per game, having 11.7 her freshman year, 16.6 her sophomore year, 19.5 her junior year and 23.4 in her senior year as of 1/21/26. As of Jan.16, Ventura has a sixteen and four record while also being undefeated with a record of eight and zero in league play with the team in search for another CIF run this year.

This record comes in the same season that VHS joined Buena girls basketball as the only two programs in California with 1,000 or more recorded wins in school history with Kailee Staniland contributing to the record with her four years on varsity. Staniland said, “To be a part of a program that has over 1,000 wins is truly once in a lifetime experience and I’m just glad that I could help the program reach that record!” VHS head coach Ann Larson has over 500 career wins for the Cougars since she was hired as the head coach in 2000.
